Business License (BPOL)
A business license is authorization stating you may operate your business in the Town of Dumfries. All businesses are required to obtain a business license from the Town before operating a business. Business licenses are administered through the Treasurer’s Office. It is unlawful to operate a business within the Town without a license. See “Business License (BPOL)” for more information.
Due Date and Penalty
A Business License must be obtained prior to the beginning of any business within the Town. Annual renewals are due no later than March 1st. The tax (BPOL) shall be paid with the submittal of the Business License application. A penalty of 10% will be assessed for late applications and/or late payments.
The Town of Dumfries does not collect Personal Property tax. Personal Property taxes are assessed by and paid to Prince William County. For more information, visit the PWC Finance Department online or call 703-792-6700.
Real Property (Real Estate)
Real Estate taxes are based on PWC Assessments and are due twice a year on June 5th and December 5th. The current tax rate is $.1899/100 of assessed value.
Penalty and Interest
A penalty of 10% will be assessed on all late payments. In addition to penalty, interest of 10% (per annum) will be added to the tax and penalty after July 1st of the succeeding year.

Any person who is exempt from the county’s motor vehicle license taxes or the real property taxes will be exempt from the town’s motor vehicle license taxes or real property taxes. The taxpayer is responsible for providing proof of such exemption. Proof of exemption must be provided yearly. Vehicle License (Decals)
All motor vehicles residing within the Town of Dumfries including, but not limited to, automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, motor scooters or vehicles of like design are required to display a valid Town decal.
Decals are purchased annually. Renewal notices are mailed out February 1st each year showing prior year information, we ask that the information be reviewed and if any changes need to be made, please make the changes on the renewal notice and you can mail the renewal notice back with payment to receive the decals by mail or you can purchase the decals in person at Town Hall. Decals go on sale March 1st and need to be displayed by April 15th, cost for the decals are $24.00. The decal(s) are valid from April 15th to April 15th of the following year.
A fine may be imposed for noncompliance of no more than $250.00.
All payments can be made in person at Town Hall or mailed to 17755 Main Street, Dumfries, VA 22026. Real Estate taxes can be paid online through Official Payments for a fee. The jurisdiction code is 6234. Please have your tax bill handy.
