As the governing body of the Town of Dumfries, the Town Council is responsible for creating policies, setting tax rates, approving the annual budget and enacting ordinances to carry out those policies. The Town Council is comprised of a mayor and six other members. All members, including the mayor, are elected at large and serve for a term of four years. Town Council meetings are held at Town Hall on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month (unless otherwise stated). Meetings begin at 7PM and are open to the public.

The mayor presides over the Council meetings and is recognized as the head of the town government for ceremonial purposes.
