Street Maintenance
The Town of Dumfries has 26.8 lane miles of streets. The Public Works Department’s mission is to maintain all Town streets in good condition while providing desirable standards of safety, appearance and convenience for residents and the traveling public within the Town. Public Works is also responsible for seasonal issues such as snow removal and tree trimming.
To Report a Street Problem:
Please contact the Department of Public Works to report debris, dead animals, brush, a damaged or missing street sign, or hazards to traffic flow in roadways. You may also contact the Street Division to report potholes or other roadway hazards/issues by calling 703-221-3400 or email Yvette Ragland at yragland@dumfriesva.gov . For road issues located outside Town limits or on State-maintained roads, please contact the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

Capital Improvement Projects:
ROUTE 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) Widening
Route 1 Northbound (Fraley Blvd) between Route 1109 (Brady’s Hill Road) and Route 234 (Dumfries Road) is classified as an Urban Principal Arterial. Route 1 Southbound is on a separate alignment. This project will convert northbound Route 1 from a 2-lane undivided roadway to a divided 6-lane so both northbound and southbound traffic will be on the northbound alignment. The proposed typical section for the 2.1-mile project will consist of a six-lane facility with three 12’ lanes in each direction. In addition to the six travel lanes, an outside lane will be added for bicycle use in both directions. The proposed design will provide a 16’ raised median with sidewalks and shared use paths on opposite sides of the roadway. The design will follow the GS-5 (Urban Principal Arterial) standard at 45 mph design speed, as outlined in the Road Design Manual.
The typical section will include CG-7 curbing and buffer space adjacent to pedestrian facilities. The roadway superelevation will be based on urban low speed (TC-5.11 ULS) design standards. Side slopes will be 3:1 or flatter, where space is available. The existing southbound Route 1 (Main St) is on a separate alignment from northbound Route 1 (Fraley Rd) within the project limits. The separate alignment will be converted to a two-way road for local traffic after the six-lane widening is completed. Environmental studies and the NEPA document have been completed. A Public Hearing is planned for this project in early 2018.
Main Street (Route 1, southbound) Intersection Project
This project consists of an additional lane on Graham Park Road between Fraley Boulevard and Main Street, increasing its width to four (4) traffic lanes. The project also includes the addition of a north bound lane between Tebbs Lane and the Curtis Drive/Graham Park Road Intersection; replacement of existing traffic signals with synchronized signals, provisions for pedestrian accessibility and the construction of a new Triangle Shopping Plaza entrance from Main Street.
Quantico Creek Stream Restoration
This is Phase I of a multi phased Quantico Creek Restoration Project. Phase I improvements start at the western town limits and extend approximately 800’ eastward. Additional Phases will be added in future years as funds become available.
TRIPOLI BOULEVARD STORM WATER DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENT
Tripoli Boulevard has an open ditch along the north side of the street. An enclosed storm water system was designed to eliminate the ditch.
