Re-Opening Update
The Town of Dumfries and the Northern Virginia Region has entered Phase 3.

Pursuant to Executive Order 63 Town of Dumfries will remain compliant with Virginia Governor Northam's mandate to wear face coverings while inside buildings. Virginia Department of Health will have authority to enforce new order and failure to comply may be punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor.

Permits & Inspections
Applications for building, certificates of occupancy and trade permits are still being accepted by the Town of Dumfries. Please follow the submittal procedure listed below. 
  • Fill out a building permit application in its entirety including an estimate of fees owed. Emails and phone numbers are mandatory.  Applications  will be accepted...
    • via email. Send scanned application and pdf. of drawing files to  Emails must include address of the site where the work is to occur. (123 Main St - Permit Application or 123 Main Street - revision 1). Photos of permit applications or plans will not be accepted.
    • Via hand delivery to Town Hall starting Tuesday (March 24th) in a drop box located in the 1st floor lobby of the building.
  • No fee is due with submission.
  • We will review the application, assign a permit number and contact you via email the fee for the permit.
  • The fee payment can be dropped off at Town offices at 17739 Main Street in a drop box located on the first floor of Town Hall. We only accept checks or money orders.
  • Once we receive the fee, we will begin the review process.
  • If revisions are necessary, you will be contacted by email. Revisions to plans will only be accepted electronically.
  • Once the plan can be approved. We will notify you when the permit can be picked up.
  • Inspections can be called in at 703-221-3400 x119.
A list of all other permits can be found in the Document Center. Use the same procedure above to submit all other permits. We encourage all applicants to submit everything electronically to expedite the approval process.
